South Africa is world famous for its Conservation efforts and its large variety of National parks but we will only briefly touch on The Kruger National Park and its neighboring Private Game Reserves. Please contact us should you require information on the other Parks.
The Kruger National Park is
one of the best known game parks in Africa with a large number of amphibians, birds,
reptiles and 147 mammals species including the "big five" all roaming in free
wildlife.. Being a government run national park, the accommodations are simple and
game viewing is controlled by staying on roads and in closed vehicles. For the last
few years the Park runs game drives at night in an open bus, departing from certain camps.
Some tour operators have permission to operate game drives in open vehicles.
The park runs various walking trails which are highly popular and are very often
booked years in advance - early bookings are recommended.
| The Sabi Sand
Reserve is probably the most famous Private Game Reserve and borders the Kruger National
Park on the south west border with no fences in between. All animals roam as freely here
as in the Kruger park. Accommodation in a variety of privately owned lodges is far
more luxurious and game drives with professional game rangers and trackers in open
landrovers offers excellent value in game viewing. Most of these camps are very luxurious
and offer gourmet wine & dine experiences. The Timbavati, just north of the Sabi Sand is another Private Game Reserve with a variety of privately owned lodges. The eco-system here differs slightly from the Sabi Sand as the Timbavati normally gets less rain. Game viewing here is as good as further south! | Northern regions of the
Country Johannesburg and Pretoria enjoy warm and hot sunny summer days, with rain and thunder showers occurring in the late afternoons. Johannesburg lies on 1600m and is slightly cooler than Pretoria and Sun City. The Kruger National Park at 400m enjoys the same kind of weather pattern, with temperature generally 4 - 5° warmer. The winters are normally dry and sunny, with radical temperature differences during day and night.The days are sunny and warm with 22°, but the night temperatures can drop to 0° |
| Durban and the East Coast Along the Indian Ocean Coast one can enjoy the beaches throughout the whole year. Durban has a subtropical climate and temperature seldom drop below 15° and the highs can go up to 35°. During the summer months Durban has quite a high humidity which can be uncomfortable. |
One can visit South Africa at any time of the year. Tell us where your interest lies and we will advise you of the best time. If you want to spend most of your time doing a safari, the best time for game viewing are the South African winter months (due to virtually no rain, shortage of water etc the animals can be viewed better). If you would like to experience the Garden Route, the best time the year would be from November through to April. It is however advisable to try and avoid the South African summer school holidays (early December to early January) as well as Easter. As in any other holiday destination most resorts are then rather fully booked!
South African has so much more to offer in other regions as well, such as the Drakensberg mountains, the northern kwa-Zulu Natal Coastline with wonderful diving spots, Bushman paintings, etc etc. We have not even touched on the sites of our neighboring countries such as Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Namibia.....too much to see, and too little time!
